Lunds konsthall invites you to an artist talk with Patricia Morosan.
Patricia Morosan will introduce her new work, the artist book M/other (2023), which is presented in the current exhibition Ways of Unseeing at Lunds konsthall. The talk is followed by a screening of Harun Farockis seminal film Images of the World and Inscription of War (1989).

Patricia Morosan is an artist born in Romania who lives and works in Berlin and Athens. She’s working with photography, text and sound. In her practice she approaches the duality of intimacy and identity. Her work is often collaborative and participatory and concerned with ideas and methods based on emotional geography, wanderings and ceremonials. In the exhibition Ways of Unseeing Morosan is presenting two works: the artist book M/other (2023) and the photographic installation Re/turn (2016–).
M/OTHER (2023) is an artist book which gathers on 236 pages electrical signals from the mother’s heart. What is shown in the artist book is a 19-minute extract of a 24 hours EKG recording. The medical device counts time and writes it down using a time frame of 10-seconds per page. Every sheet becomes a time-telescope, depicting the work of the heart’s valves. A pronunciation of time: heartbeat by heartbeat. The medical language appears here as a score onto which the artist wrote a multilingual poem that manifests itself as a spell.
Harun Farocki (1944–2014) produced more than a hundred films for TV and cinema before his death in 2014. Besides this, he served as editor for the influential journal Filmkritikk and taught at the universities of Berkeley and Vienna. He enrolled at the German Film and TV academy, but was thrown out of the school in 1966 as a consequence of his political activism.
Bilder der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges (Images of the World and the Inscription of War, 1989), is a study of the status of the photographic image in Western modernity. In this work, Farocki demonstrates that opportunistic tendencies have always surrounded this perceived ability of the medium to render absolute truths. This essay film brings together visual materials from a variety of sources: Lufthansa’s flight simulators, scenes from a croquis session, archive materials related to the development of photogrammetry, machines used to make architectural plans and surveillance photographs taken by French intelligence agencies in Algeria in the 1960s. In the film, Farocki delves into the depths of the human race’s obsession with the use of visual means to depict our surroundings, and asks what it is that actually happens when images and reality are mistakenly assumed to be one and the same.

The evening will be moderated by curator, writer and artist Hans Carlsson, who is the curator of Ways of Unseeing.

Patricia Morosan är född i Rumänien och är verksam i Berlin och Aten. Hon arbetar med fotografi, text och ljud. I sin praktik utforskar hon, ofta med en feministisk lins, intimitetens och identitetens olika skiktningar. Morosans arbete utvecklas ofta genom samarbeten och kan beskrivas som en slags emotionella geografier eller ceremonier. I utställningen Ways of Unseeing presenterar hon två verk: konstnärsboken M/other (2023) och den fotografiska installationen Re/turn (2016-).
M/OTHER (2023) samlar på 236 sidor ett 19 minuters utdrag ur en 24 timmar lång EKG-inspelning av moderns hjärta. Den medicinska utrustningen räknar tiden och gestaltar den med 10 sekunder per sida. Varje ark blir till en tidsportal, som visar hjärtklaffarnas arbete. Det medicinska språket framträder likt ett partitur på vilket konstnären har skrivit en flerspråkig dikt som antar formen av en besvärjelse.
Harun Farocki (1944–2014) producerade över hundra filmer för TV och bio, samt flera videoinstallationer för utställningssamanhang. Utöver detta var han redaktör för den inflytelserika tidskriften Filmkritikk och undervisade vid universiteten i Berkeley och Wien. Han började studera vid den tyska film- och tv-akademin men sparkades 1966 ut från skolan på grund av sitt politiska engagemang.
I Bilder der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges (Bilder av världen, krigets avtryck,1989), studeras den fotografiska bildens status i den västerländska moderniteten, och visar att opportunismen kring mediets förmåga att rendera sanningen egentligen aldrig upphört. I essäfilmen sammankopplas bildmaterial från en rad olika håll: från Lufthansas flygsimulatorer, scener från en krokimålning, maskiner som gör arkitektritningar och bilder som den franska övermakten i Algeriet tog i övervakningssyfte under 1960-talet. Farocki tränger i filmen djupt in i människans besatthet av att återge sin omgivning med visuella medel, och frågar vad som egentligen händer när bild och verklighet blandas samman
Samtalet och visningen stöds av IASPIS/konstnärsnämnden. Patricia Morosan är för närvarande IASPIS residensstipendiat i Malmö.
Kvällen kommer att modereras av curatorn, författaren och konstnären Hans Carlsson, som är curator för Ways of Unseeing.
